the kool-aid dye tutorial

so i was given some of this great wool yarn from here: harrisville yarns (scroll down, its the highland). it has just been sitting in its naturalness, lovely, but not really motivating. what a better thing to do while the oscars are on than dye it with kool-aid?

first i asked colby to weigh it all on his fancy postage scale and i labeled the individual skeins ~to figure out how much kool-aid to use, of course!

i had six skeins between 2+ and 4+ oz.

i selected 3 kool-aid flavors:
lemon-lime: whoever saw 100% wool in this color?
berry blue: cause it is going to be pretty
and, soarin' strawberry lemonade: for my breast cancer awareness month scarf

soak yarn in warm water for about 20-30 minutes.

i separated the yarn into the lots i would be dying at this point

prepare the dye baths: in a liquid ratio of about 3 parts water : 1 part vinegar i used 1 cup of liquid and 1 packet of kool-aid to every ounce of yarn. once all the kool-aid is dissolved i bring it up to just slight of boiling temperature

colby comes in looking for a snack

getting rid of excess water in preparation to transfer yarn into dye bath

it soaks up must faster than i thought it would. you have to get it all in there at once or turn it over the second it goes in

i added water to it to cover all the fiber after it was all in and added more kool-aid to the lime green and blue baths. next time i might make a double batch, since it sucked up all that water so quickly

hanging out, shy of boiling for about 30 minutes. i had to turn it down a little

i turned it over gently, attempting more evenness of color.

after water is clear (without color) i'm done! i let it cool some and rinse and then drain it in water of the same temperature.

i ring out excess water and hang to dry

definitely not super even, but a little more exciting. my timing couldn't have been more perfect. the oscar's just ended! good night!
